Sculptor Daniel Edwards Is At It Again
Our favorite sculptor Daniel Edwards is back with a new Paris Hilton DUI sculpture. It's called "Paris Hilton Autopsy."

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, this guys' a really great artist. Not only is he good technique-wise, he seems to be at the forefront of forcing people to look at pop icons in a sobering light.
He's a character this guy, Daniel Edwards. He even came down here to Miami with a Fidel Castro sculpture, and let a mob of crazy Cubans destroy the thing in the middle of 8th street. Check it out:

How many artists (that you've heard of) would let an exile community destroy one of his own pieces?
I think it's smart, thoughtful, and original.

hes the new pop culture artist
I sculpt and his technique is really good however what he sculpts is dubious in my opinion. It seems to me he is a publicity seeker who sculpts controversial subjects not because they are important but because they are controversial. Do you really think naked Celebes with their legs akimbo are art?
I think the sculptures are only the beginning with Daniel Edwards... it's the other dimensions Edwards brings to the work: the press releases (which often seem designed to do well in search engines), the follow-on activities (selling Suri Cruise Poop on eBay , running the Paris Hilton obituary contest as an example of participatory media, and so on. The sculpture is just the beginning.
Also, his work deliberately resonates with a lot of stuff that's piled up in our common cultural symbolic repository: Britney Spears (the perennial Madonna wannabe) as Madonna with child, or Paris Hilton's chihuahua who reminds me of depictions of a hound frolicking with Artemis/Diana. (Note also that Princess Di made it into the press release for the Paris Hilton drunk driving sculpture.)
This guy is really a pretty canny prankster pop artist. I'm curious to see what he comes up with for Barack Obama and Anna Nicole Smith, who both seem overdue for a treatment given past subjects such as Hilary Clinton, Fidel Castro and Britney.
If he's feeling particulary gutsy, maybe he'll do something with President Bush...
I am really happy to see that people are discussing the merits of Daniel's work. I would like to encourage everyone to view the piece in person if they can.

We are likely to take the work on national tour again this year as we did with Britney last year. Stops are likely to include: Los Angles, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago and Miami. More later.
Paris Hilton with her dog Tinkerbell and Koon's Michael Jackson with the chimpanzee Bubbles are images that reflect this culture. Marie Antoinette with 4 foot hair was similar. Society is ridiculous, the art is just a mirror.
this art is as important as the Mona Lisa or Sistine chapel easily.
